For a school project, we had to choose a thought leader. When this project was announced, I knew I needed a leader who was weird, a little quirky, and full of life to. I needed a person that would interest my ADHD brain, and the book NUTS! Southwest Airlines’ Crazy Recipe for Business and Personal Success outlined how Herb Kelleher approached his business, which drew me in right away.
I think the thing that stuck with me the most was that Southwest allows freedom. Kelleher always preached that allowing employees creative freedom leads to a fun workplace, and ultimately better job satisfaction. You can see videos of flight attendants rapping, doing stand up comedy, or singing the safety briefing.
Herb Kelleher has been a mentor for many over the years because of his crazy take on business. He revolutionized leadership. He treated his employees the way he wanted to be treated. He developed a relationship with each employee over the years and was known for remembering details about every person he met.
Herb Kelleher passed away on January 3, 2019. His legacy will live on in anyone who learns about his leadership style. I hope that I can follow his example through my parenting, group projects, and workplace attitude. I’m excited to learn more about the crazy, wacky life that was Herb Kelleher’s through the research for my leadership course.
